Hey, Workaholic!

Have you ever thought about the creation of the world? God, in His infinite wisdom, decided to create this magnificent masterpiece we see daily. Every day we see these things – trees, stars, animals, water, people and much more. All are intricately designed, and I believe points to the Designer.

While the story on the surface speaks about how the world was formed, like all Scripture, there are many lessons that can be garnered by one story. The Creation story is no exception.

Genesis 1 illustrates how God took six days to create this space that we live in. He also took an additional day to rest. Many theologians refer to the seventh day as an example for the Israelites, and by extension, us, God’s people. This is our day of worship, especially when we fellowship with the saints.

I posit to you that like the seventh day that is an example, the other six days are an example to us.

God could have completed the creation of the world in one day. It is not beyond Him. He is powerful and able to do it. However, He opted to create the world in “bits and pieces”. Everything was not rushed. He took the time and engaged in the process of creation, ensuring what He did was well done.

Interesting.

Maybe this is His way of telling us that it is okay to put our large tasks into manageable ones. We will get overwhelmed when we try to bite off more than we can chew. Instead, we should do the little we can and reflect on our efforts in the Lord. We honour Him by engaging in the process and delighting in the final product.

The world often tells us that we are insufficient if we are always not productive. It glorifies much work with little rest. However, God, through the creation story gives us a more sustainable alternative. We should always have a good work / rest balance. These things please Him. Once we are faithful to Him in this way, His glory will be revealed in and through us.
